1. What do I wear? What don’t I wear?
Getting undressed to your level of comfort is a good rule of thumb. Keep in mind that you will be covered completely, except the part of your body that is receiving therapy. If you chose to keep shorts on, make sure they are loose. For example, the muscles in the legs attach at the knee and join at the hip. So, in order to glide the length of those muscles effectively, access to the area is important.
2. What kind of massage should I ask for?
Deep tissue and trigger point work is very effective, but it can be uncomfortable during the treatment. On the other hand, Swedish massage is for relaxation, and doesn’t target problem areas.
3. Will the massage hurt?
Never ever suffer through a massage. Everyone’s tolerance for pain is different. On a scale from one to ten, ten being the worst, a six or seven is a target zone for trigger point work and deeper techniques. You should communicate with your therapist.
4. Will the massage be relaxing?
Relaxation is generally what most people want from a massage. You should be warm and cozy. If not, ask for a blanket. Another way to relax is to take deep cleansing breaths and close your eyes.
5. Should I be quiet during the massage?
Being quiet and meditative lets you feel the massage and connects your body and mind. This will help relieve stress. Communication should be reserved for special needs.
6. Is there a code of ethics for massage therapists?
There are codes, ethics, and standards for massage therapists. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. You can end the massage at any time, and report your feelings to the State Board of Massage.
